The Chatterbait Trailer Dilemma: Paddle Tail vs. Straight Tail
A Chatterbait is only as good as the trailer you put on the back of it. If you use the wrong plastic in the wrong situation, you will kill the bait's action entirely.
The Bladed Swim Jig (universally known as the Chatterbait) is arguably the greatest shallow-water reaction bait of the 21st century. It flashes like a spinnerbait, thumps like a crankbait, and comes through grass like a jig.
But out of the package, a Chatterbait is incomplete. It requires a soft plastic trailer to give it a profile and stabilize its action in the water.
Most anglers just grab whatever soft plastic they have laying around—usually a paddle tail swimbait or a straight-tail fluke—and thread it on. What they don’t realize is that the trailer completely dictates the depth, the speed, and the hunting action of the lure. Choose wrong, and you turn a legendary bait into a piece of junk.
1. The Paddle Tail (The Lift and Thump)
Threading a paddle tail swimbait (like a Keitech Swing Impact FAT or a Strike King Shadalicious) onto the back of a Chatterbait is incredibly popular, but it has a very specific time and place.
The Effect: A paddle tail creates massive water resistance (drag) and generates a lot of “lift.” It acts like a parachute behind the vibrating blade.
When to use it:
- Shallow Water & Thick Grass: Because the paddle tail creates lift, it forces the Chatterbait to ride higher in the water column. This is perfect when you want to “slow roll” the bait just inches beneath the surface, right over the top of submerged hydrilla or milfoil without sinking into the muck.
- Muddy Water: The aggressive kicking action of the tail, combined with the thumping blade, moves maximum water. It helps bass locate the bait in zero-visibility conditions.
When to AVOID it: Do not use a paddle tail if you want to fish fast. The drag of the tail will cause the Chatterbait to “blow out” (roll over on its side and break the surface) if you try to burn it on a fast retrieve.
2. The Straight Tail (The Dart and Hunt)
A straight-tail jerk shad (like a Z-Man RaZor ShadZ or a Zoom Super Fluke) is the choice of hardcore Chatterbait purists.
The Effect: A straight tail creates almost zero drag. It cuts through the water cleanly, allowing the vibrating blade on the front to completely dictate the action.
When to use it:
- The “Hunting” Action: Because there is no drag stabilizing the rear of the bait, a straight tail allows the Chatterbait to “hunt.” As you reel it in, the bait will randomly dart an inch to the left, vibrate straight, and then randomly dart an inch to the right. This unpredictable, erratic hunting action is exactly what triggers following bass to strike.
- Fishing Deeper: With no lift from the trailer, the bait stays down. You can fish a 1/2 oz Chatterbait efficiently in 6 to 8 feet of water.
- Burning: You can reel a straight-tail setup as fast as you want, and it will never roll over or blow out.
Bottom Line: Stop treating your Chatterbait trailer as an afterthought. If you are fishing shallow grass and need to reel slowly, use a paddle tail. If you want erratic hunting action, deeper water penetration, or speed, pin a straight tail on the back. Match the trailer to the job.
