The Fall Turnover: Why You Are Struggling to Catch Bass in October
If the lake smells like rotten eggs, the water looks like pea soup, and the fish have completely disappeared, you aren't doing anything wrong. You are caught in the Fall Turnover.
It is the most frustrating phenomenon in bass fishing. As the cool nights of early autumn arrive, you expect the fishing to get better as the bass feed heavily for the winter. But instead, you hit the water one morning and find that the lake has completely died.
Not only can you not get a bite, but the water looks cloudy, there are weird bubbles on the surface, and the lake smells like sulfur or decaying plants.
You haven’t lost your mind. The lake is “turning over.”
1. The Science of the Turnover
During the summer, the lake separates into distinct temperature layers (stratification). The warmest water sits on top (the epilimnion), while the coldest, heaviest water sits at the bottom (the hypolimnion). Because they don’t mix, by late summer, the deep bottom water is completely depleted of oxygen and is full of decaying organic matter and sulfur gases.
Then comes autumn. As the air temperature drops, the warm surface water begins to cool. Water is heaviest at 39°F (4°C). When the cooling surface water becomes denser and heavier than the warmer water below it, physics takes over.
The heavy surface water rapidly sinks to the bottom, pushing the dead, oxygen-starved, sulfur-smelling bottom water up to the surface. The entire lake literally “flips” or mixes. This is the Fall Turnover.
2. The Impact on the Bass (Shock and Chaos)
The turnover is an ecological disaster zone for the bass.
Suddenly, their stable environment is thrown into chaos. The water temperature drops rapidly, the clarity turns to muck as decades of bottom sediment are stirred up, and oxygen levels fluctuate wildly.
Bass hate this. They go into a state of shock. They stop feeding, hunker down, and wait for the water chemistry to stabilize. If you are fishing in an area that is actively turning over, you are fishing for fish that refuse to eat.
3. How to Survive the Turnover
You cannot fight the turnover, but you can avoid it or adapt to it.
Strategy 1: Fish the Extremes The main body of the lake turns over first because it holds the most deep water. To avoid it, run as far up the shallow feeder creeks and rivers as possible. Extremely shallow water doesn’t stratify in the summer, so it doesn’t turn over in the fall. The fish there will still be feeding normally.
Strategy 2: Follow the Wind and Current If you must fish the main lake, look for areas with heavy current or wind. Current prevents water from stratifying, meaning those areas don’t experience a severe turnover.
Strategy 3: Slow Down and Bulk Up If you are caught in the turnover muck and can’t move, you must fish as if it is the dead of winter. The fish are shocked and lethargic. Put away the fast-moving crankbaits and topwaters. Drag a large, bulky, dark-colored jig slowly through heavy cover. Give them a big, slow meal that they don’t have to work for.
Bottom Line: The turnover usually lasts a week to ten days. When you smell the sulfur and see the cloudy water, don’t panic. Move shallow, find current, or simply grind it out with a jig until the lake settles down.
